Ceremonies - Royal Visits and city ceremonial achievements
On 30th June, 1953, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Her
Royal Highness The Princess Margaret set out from England for their
second visit to Southern Rbodesia, a British selfgoverning territory
lying between the Zambesi and Limpopo Rivers in South-Central Africa. In
1947 the Royal Family travelled to Southern Africa in H.M.S. Vanguard,
pride of the Royal Navy; this year, the Queen Mother and Princess
Margaret flew in the famous Comet jet-airliner, the pride of Bqtain's
Civil Aviation. H.M. the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh (above) were at
London Airport to see the Royal tourists depart, as were Lord Swinton,
Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, and Mr. Oliver Lyttelton,
Colonial Secretary. Princess Margaret turned to give a last wave as she
followed her mother into the plane.
At noon on 1st July the plane carrying the Queen Mother and Princess
Margaret touched down at Salisbury's new airport, eleven miles outside
the capital city. It was the first time that a Comet had landed at this
airport.
